How do you spell Theatre?

The Histroic State Theatre of Minneapolis uses the "re" spelling of theatre in it's official name, but it's not uncommon to see the "er" spelling i.e. State Theater or Historic State Theater or State Theater Minneapolis.
It is widely accepted that the "re" spelling of theatre refers to a live performance and that the "er" theater spelling is more cinema related as in a movie theater.
